NanoWrimo for One Freelance Writer

Freelancing and Nano

My fifth attempt at finishing Nanowrimo, the problem is that freelance writers already write a significant amount each week and perhaps trying to pull in another 50,000 words a month is asking too much. In spite of this difficulty I and many other freelancers try our best to reach that target. There are 11 days left to the finish and I'm still unsure whether I'm going to make it - that doesn't mean I'm going to give up.

21,000 Words So Far

I don't know whether I can get to the finishing line with 50,000 words but think that if I can get 2,500 extra words a day, I just might be in with a chance. I suppose the problem is that even if you have a plan, you are still trying to work things out as you go along. I probably write a lot more than 50,000 words in a good month of freelancing but making all those words cover one subject is a tough job - and I speak as one who has written a PhD thesis of more than 100,000 words on theology and domestic violence - but I am finding a novel harder to write.

Characters are Not as Easy to Manipulate as Subjects

I think that as usual, people might be the problem. Even though I think I know my main character pretty well, it's not always easy to judge what they might do next. I know that the idea is not to edit or rewrite but just get the words down, unfortunately I find this very difficult other than when I am journallng or engaging in free writing exercises. Just writing without editing is something I find quite difficult - and I know that slows me down. How about you? Is there anything in particular that hangs you up during Nano?
